One of the most poignant things I got out of the interview is how fewer troops are dying because of improved medical care. People that would have died of such traumatic injuries in previous wars can now be saved - but they need multiple, massive surgeries, over weeks and months. They are sent to facilities like Brooke Army Medical Center that may be far away from their home towns. The government doesn't pay for a family to come out to be with their loved one - maybe for a week, but no more.
The Fisher House Foundation builds "comfort houses" on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful times - during the hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease, or injury.
Ty says that he wouldn't have survived his 19 surgeries at Brooke Army if his and his mom hadn't been there to support him. Please, if you can, support this charity by clicking here.

That's really sad. The bride doesn't look too happy either, hopefully she sticks by him
Paulo,
I am taking this from Salon, where comments can be lost in the shuffle and interrupted by ads.
From "Valentinian - 4:13pm" - As the Secret Service (presidential protection in US) can attest, there is absolutely nothing anyone can do about someone willing to kill and sacrifice themselves in doing it, other than catch them before they make their "end run."
As for jetliners - if people (even unarmed) had been in the habit of fighting against such situations (hijacking) rather than be passive (don't risk yourself, just be calm and let the professionals handle it), the damage would have been significantly lessened - United 93 being case in point.
I think the non-sheep (but not necessarily wolfish - more shepherd) mindset is more important than the actual weapons used. Consider there are (according to anti-gun folks) lots of people killed with their own guns by the criminals. Why? I am guessing they didn't have the mental wherewithal to pull the trigger when the bad guy called their bluff. And, as the pro-gun folks point out, you can kill with many things that aren't guns.
Regards,
Bryan Hayward
